Hey people!
:)
As to my
latest blog about Nicholas Sparks, I am now going to introduce you to my
favorite book of him. It's called "The Notebook" and was published in
1996. It's a romantic novel based on a true story. The book plays in North
Carolina after World II.
Later they
made a film out of it with the same name in 2004. The main characters are
played by Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling!
The book
starts with Noah Calhoun, an old man, reading to an older woman in a nursing
home:
Noah
returns from World War II to the town New Bern in North Carolina. He buys an
old house and starts restoring it after his father's death. Meanwhile Allie
sees an article about it in a newspaper and decides to visit Noah.
Noah and
Allie are meeting again after 14 years. They were having a passionate summer
romance when Allie and her family were visiting the town. Their love wasn't accepted
and they were separated by class. Meanwhile not seeing Noah, Allie got engaged
to Lon.
Seeing each
other brings a flood of old memories and strong emotions and they decide to
have dinner together and talk. Allie finds out that Noah wrote letters to her,
which her mother hid, so Allie thinks that Noah had forgotten about her. They
talk about memories and what could have happened between them, if her mother
hadn't hid his letters. At the end of the night Noah invites Allie for the next
day and she decides to see him again. Her fiancé Lon tries to reach her at the
hotel and begins to worry.
The next
day Noah and Allie see each other again and take a canoe ride. After returning
to Noah's house they confess their feelings for each other, which have never
changed. They kiss and share a night with each other.
The next
morning Allie's mother shows up and gives Allie the letters from Noah. Allie is
torn. She loves Noah, who begs her to stay with him, but she doesn't want to
hurt Lon and leaves. At the hotel her fiancé is waiting in the lobby.
The man
stops reading the story and says that he's reading it to his wife who suffers
from Alzheimer's disease. She doesn't recognize him anymore. The man himself is
also ill, battling a third cancer, kidney failure, severe arthritis in his
hands and heart disease. He resumes reading the story and describing the life
of them. He had changed the names in the story, but he's Noah and she's Allie.
They walk together and in the evening they have dinner and she says that she
thinks Allie chose Noah in the story. She finally recognizes her husband and
tells him that she loves him. They talk about everything, but after a few
hours, Allie fades. She doesn't recognize him again and starts to panic. On
their 49th wedding day Noah visits Allie. They are both exhausted
and ill. A miracle happens and Allie recognizes him and says that she missed
him.
I loved
reading the book and watching the movie. It tied me down and I couldn't stop
reading. In my opinion it's an amazing book/film and it's really romantic how
Noah wrote down their story in a "notebook" to read it to his wife
Allie. In addition it's based on a true story, the story of the grandparents of
Nicholas Spark's wife.
I think you
can see how people were acting earlier and how a difference in class could
separate two people.
All in all
I can recommend the book and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Have a nice
day
Steffi :)
